These two terms are often used interchangeably, but they describe different things — and understanding the difference helps clarify what a business actually needs.
Content writing
This is the craft of writing the actual words — website pages, blog posts, product descriptions — clearly and persuasively, with attention to structure and SEO.
Content marketing
This is the broader strategy: deciding what content to create, for whom, and why, and how it fits into a business’s overall marketing goals.
Why the distinction matters
Good writing without a clear strategy can produce content that reads well but doesn’t serve a purpose. A strategy without good writing can produce content that’s well-targeted but doesn’t hold anyone’s attention.
Where they meet
The most effective content usually comes from combining both — a clear reason for creating a piece of content, paired with writing that’s actually worth reading.
For most small businesses, starting with a handful of genuinely useful, well-written pages beats publishing a large volume of unfocused content.
